I was born in Dublin in 1960, and grew up in Rathfarnham, where my father, an engineer and grandfather, an artist were major influences. Dexterous skills as well as academic and scientific learning were valued in our house and the foundations were laid for a career in engineering. I went to school in Terenure College and did an engineering degree at TCD. I qualified with a first class honour in 1981 and joined the ESB on the construction of Moneypoint Generating Station. After 3 years I left the ESB to work for a small Clare contractor on the same project and for a short period of time I worked for John Paul Construction in Dublin. I set up my own business as a building and civil engineering contractor at the age of 27 in 1987.
While operating my own business, I worked for the MF Kent Group of Clonmel, both in Ireland and overseas for 3 years.
My wife and co-founder of the company Mary, died in 2009 after a long battle with MS. I have two adult children both working in Ireland but not in the family business. I continue to live in Co. Clare with my partner Maeve.
